Sabrina Carpenter reveals transformation after 'first real heartbreak' (2024)

Sabrina Carpenter revealed that after dealing with her 'first real heartbreak,' she made the major decision to cut her bangs.

The Espresso songstress, 25 - who recently broke music records on the U.K. charts - opened up about the transformation in her appearance while talking to Vanity Fair in a video shared on Thursday.

While painting a portrait of herself throughout the clip, she began answering the question: 'What does your self-discovery process look like?'

And as she started to work on her bangs, Carpenter revealed to the outlet, 'I literally cut my bangs 'cause someone broke my heart and I was just like, "I have to do something."'

However, the beauty explained, 'And I'm not usually one of those people that has to make, like, rash decisions when their feelings are hurt, but that was my first real heartbreak.'

'And so I guess it just sparked that initial, like, "I have to do something different,"' she further recalled.

Sabrina - who is now romantically linked to Barry Keoghan - then added that while she did want a change when it comes to hairstyle, coloring her locks wasn't an option.

'But I never wanted to dye my hair 'cause I always really felt comfortable as, you know, blonde that way I was born.'

While the performer opted to not disclose who had broken her heart, her change in hairstyle appeared to have taken place following her rumored romance with actor, Joshua Bassett.

The pair were first linked in 2020, but never publicly confirmed their relationship. But when Joshua's ex, Olivia Rodrigo, dropped the hit track, Driver's License, fans speculated that she referenced to Carpenter in the lyrics, as well as their split.

'And you're probably with that blonde girl/ Who always made me doubt/ She's so much older than me/ She's everything I'm insecure about,' Rodrigo sang.

The following year in December 2021, Bassett revealed during an interview with GQ that he was single.

During the same video interview with Vanity Fair, Sabrina expressed, 'I really think that the beauty of being this age is some days you can feel like truly borderline so conceited and obnoxiously confident.'

'And then all it takes is someone saying one thing that just strikes a chord in you to be like, "I'm actually the ugliest person to ever exist." And then it kind of is a big flip-flop.'

The Sue Me hitmaker added, 'But I think for me, I feel like I have better things to worry about than the way that I look.'

She also talked about how real-life experiences have inspired her music, and said, 'I would say in the last few years especially, people that have come into my life have really affected the music that I've made.'

'And what I've written about, and what has felt important enough to write about,' the star continued.

While further speaking to Vanity Fair in an article also published on Thursday, Sabrina revealed thatshe's 'in love for the first time.'

Last year in September, Carpenter was romantically linked to Saltburn star, Barry Keoghan and officially made their red carpet debut at the MET Gala earlier this year in May.

At one point, she discussed her friendship with Taylor Swift and said, 'It is magnificent to grow up idolizing someone, and then meet them, and they are all the things that you hoped that they would be.'

'On a personal level, she's really been there for me, and I'm so grateful. That's something she's taught me really well - she has remained very human throughout all of it.'

In regards to penning about her love life in songs, the singer said, 'It's a lot of what I'm writing about, and it's a lot of what inspires me.'

'Once I put it out there, it's for other people to interpret. I try to not tell people what a song is explicitly about.'

The beauty added, 'People don't always know what's going on inside the minds of anyone, let alone a young girl who's navigating love and a lot of things for the first time.'

Carpenter has been filtering through a busy schedule, and recently announced her Short n' Sweet Tour in North America.

She took to her main Instagram page earlier this month to share the big news to her fans and penned, 'THE SHORT N' SWEET TOUR!!!!!! in north america, with special guests@amaarae @wiffygriffy & @thedeclanmckenna.'

To conclude the caption, the singer added, 'I can’t wait to be singing with you all soon,' followed by a red lipstick emoji.

The tour is slated to kick off on September 23 in Columbus, Ohio and will conclude later on November 15 in Los Angeles.

The concerts will take place to promote her new album, Short n' Sweet, which is set to drop later this summer on August 23.

It comes before she made a record on the U.K. charts as becoming the youngest female artist to reach number one and two in the same week.
