GRAND CHUTE – The 2024 WIAA state baseball tournament wrapped up its first day Monday with four Division 1 quarterfinal games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
The other three divisions have their opening rounds Tuesday and Wednesday with all the title games Thursday. There will be new champions in every division as none of the 2023 winners returned to state.
We had live updates from all four Division 1 quarterfinals. The top three seeds – De Pere, Oak Creek and Sun Prairie East – punched their tickets to Wednesday’s semifinals after victories. No. 5 seed Westosha Central knocked off No. 4 seed Arrowhead.

Oak Creek advances to Division 1 semifinals
Cade Palkowski pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts to close out the victory for Oak Creek with an 11-5 win over Nicolet.
Oak Creek improves to 27-3 and will play Sun Prairie East (26-4) in a semifinal game Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium.
Nicolet finishes the season with a 23-7 record.
Oak Creek three outs away from victory
Nicolet put the first two runners on base in the top of the sixth on an error and a walk, marking the end of the pitching night for Oak Creek starter Payten Jibben. He went out to right field, with Cade Palkowski coming on to pitch.
Palkowski hit the first batter he faced, Nolan Sandee, with a pitch to load the bases with no outs for Nicolet. John Merk followed with a grounder to shortstop that turned into a 6-4-3 double play, with Aidan Dobson scoring on the play for Nicolet to make it 10-5.
Ben Ott then struck out looking to cut short the Nicolet rally with only one run scored.
Oak Creek got the run back in the bottom of the sixth when C.J. Trask walked with the bases loaded to score Royce Doyle with two outs.

Oak Creek takes charge over Nicolet with seven-run inning
Oak Creek, the No. 2 seed, rallied and broke open the game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth after a scoreless top of the inning for No. 7 seed Nicolet.
Payten Jibben led off the bottom half with a triple to right-center and he scored on a single to left field by Nathan Hanel to tie the game 4-4. Ethan Mallonee pinch ran for Hanel and stole second base. Mallonee had his arm looked at after the steal, but he stayed in the game.
After an out, Royce Doyle drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Mack Endres then singled up the middle to score Mallonee from second, and pinch runner Jackson Villarreal and Endres both advanced a base on the throw.
Brady Rickert then tripled to left field to score Villarreal and Endres to give Oak Creek a 7-4 lead.
Gavin Zastrow followed with a walk, bringing Oak Creek back to the top of the order with Cade Palkowski. With Palkowski at the plate, Zastrow stole second and a throwing error allowed him to get to third and Rickert to score on the error.
Palkowski followed with a triple to center field – the third triple of the inning for Oak Creek – to score Zastrow. Palkowski has three hits in three trips to the plate and is a home run shy of the cycle.
Ben Ott came on in relief of Sandee, who went to play shortstop, but Ott was greeted with a single to center by C.J. Trask to score Palkowski and give Oak Creek a 10-4 lead.
Jibben struck out swinging for the second out. After an intentional walk to Hanel, Nate Schopf struck out swinging to end the inning.

Nicolet maintains lead on Oak Creek
Nicolet went down in order in the top of the fourth inning, including the fifth strikeout by Oak Creek starting pitcher Payten Jibben.
Nolan Sandee came in to pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning for Nicolet in relief of starter Jack Stuck, who stayed in the game to play second base.
Sandee retired the first two batters before Cade Palkowski doubled down the line in left field, but he was stranded there.
The fourth was the first inning in the game without a run scored.

Nicolet leads Oak Creek through three
Nicolet scored three runs in the top of the first inning and added a run in the second inning and leads Oak Creek 4-3 through three innings in the final Division 1 quarterfinal game of the day.
Oak Creek scored its two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Ben Ott had an RBI single in the first inning for Nicolet. Gabe Nelson added an RBI triple and another run scored on a throwing error.
Nicolet scored in the second on a double by Jack Stuck and an RBI single by Ott.
Oak Creek got its runs in the second on an RBI single by Mack Endres to center field and an RBI single up the middle by Cade Palkowski to score Endres.
Oak Creek added a run in the third when Payten Jibben singled to left, went to third on a single by Royce Doyle and scored on a balk.

Sun Prairie East tops Hudson, 4-3, on walk-off hit in seventh
Hudson went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh on two fly balls to center field and a pop out to second.
That left Sun Prairie East starting pitcher Drew Kavanaugh at 96 pitches and brought Sun Prairie East to the plate with the chance to win the game.
Freshman Cam Glusick, a pinch hitter, led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a line drive to center field for a single. Sam Ostrenga then bunted in front of the plate and the throw to first bounced off the glove of the first baseman for an error, allowing Ostrenga to reach and sending Luke Damm, who re-entered the game to run for Glusick, to make it to third base. Max Glusick was then intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.
Drew Kavanaugh, a left-handed hitter and the winning pitcher, then lined a hard smash off the glove of Hudson third baseman Silas Heisler for a hit to allow Damm to race home from third with the winning run.

Hudson ties Sun Prairie East with two runs in sixth
Hudson scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
The Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth on a single by Hunter Carlson, a walk to Logan Hagman and an infield single by Bradyn Bezanson that ricocheted off the pitcher.
The Raiders plated their second run of the game when Jace Mataczynski delivered a sacrifice fly to right-center to score Carlson, with Hagman advancing to third base. Sun Prairie pitcher Drew Kavanaugh then threw over to third base to attempt to pick off Hagman, but Kavanaugh was called for a balk and Hagman trotted home with the tying run.
Bennett Brathol popped out in foul territory for the final out of the inning.
Sun Prairie East went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth and the game is headed to the seventh inning tied.

Sun Prairie East continues to lead Hudson
The fifth inning opened with a rare 9-3 putout as Hudson’s Jack Solheid lined a single to right field but was thrown out at first on a strong, accurate throw from Sun Prairie East right fielder Luke Damm.
Drew Kavanaugh retired the next two batters and is through five innings with 60 pitches.
Max Glusick led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double down the left-field line for Sun Prairie East, but Bradyn Bezanson struck out the next two batters.
Hudson made a pitching change, with Sam Abrahamson moving from third base to the mound. Bezanson remained in the game as the designated hitter.
Abrahamson got Isaac Wendler to fly out to center field for the final out of the inning.

Sam Abrahamson goes deep for Hudson
Hudson’s Sam Abrahamson led off the top of the fourth inning with the first home run of the tournament, a towering shot to left field that hit on top of the roof of the pavilion beyond the outfield wall.
It was the first run of the game for Hudson and the first hit allowed by Sun Prairie East pitcher Drew Kavanaugh. It was the second home run of the season for Abrahamson.
Bradyn Bezanson added a two-out single to right for Hudson and then Jace Mataczynski walked, but Kavanaugh got out of the inning without further damage on a fly out to shallow center.
Kavanaugh has thrown 51 pitches through four innings.
Manny Abreu led off the bottom of the fourth for Sun Prairie East with an infield single to shortstop. Courtesy runner Braydon Johnson then stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Luke Damm popped out to short right, with Johnson holding at third, and Sam Ostrenga made the final out with another fly out to shall right to end the rally.
Bezanson is at 81 pitches for Hudson.

Sun Prairie East adds to lead over Hudson
Hudson was retired in the top of the third inning on just four pitches, with all three outs coming on fly balls.
Sun Prairie East pitcher Drew Kavanaugh has yet to allow a hit and has thrown 28 pitches through three innings.
Sam Ostrenga led off the bottom of the third for Sun Prairie East with a walk and then, with Max Glusick batting, was on the run as Glusick lined a hit to center field with Ostrenga getting to third. Glusick then stole second base and when the throw went into center field, Ostrenga raced home to make it 2-0.
After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Isaac Wendler lined a single to left field to score courtesy runner Reed Saugstad to make it 3-0.
Hudson starter Bradyn Bezanson has thrown 64 pitches.

Sun Prairie East takes the lead
After Hudson stranded one runner in the top of the second, Sun Prairie East put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning.
Sun Prairie East got a leadoff single on a line drive to left-center by Isaac Wendler. Van Vogler followed with a ground single to left. Manny Abreu then bunted to the pitcher, sending Wendler to third and Vogler to second. Gavin Meece then sent a bouncer to short and was thrown out at first, with Wendler scoring from third with the game’s first run and Vogler advancing to third. Luke Damm then grounded out to short to end the inning.

Hudson went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning of the third Division 1 quarterfinal game.

Easton Arendt shut down Menasha in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the victory.
Arendt completed the complete game by getting Quinn Ludvigsen to ground out to the mound for the final out. Arendt struck out the first two batters of the seventh.
De Pere improves to 25-3 and will play Westosha Central in a semifinal Wednesday. Menasha finishes the season with a 19-7 record.

De Pere maintains two-run lead
Menasha got a single from Ryan Johnson to lead off the sixth inning, but the next three batters were retired.
Easton Arendt led off the bottom of the sixth with a single for De Pere. After an out, Arendt stole second with Javin Gauthier at the plate. Gauthier was then intentionally walked to put runners on first and second.
Milo Upton struck out swinging for the second out, then Jake Weckwerth grounded out to third for the final out on a nice play by Menasha third baseman Ryan Johnson.
De Pere is three outs away from advancing to the semifinals.

De Pere on the board with two runs
Top-seeded De Pere finally broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Milo Upton walked to lead off the inning for the Redbirds and Brett Weckwerth came in as a pinch-runner. Jake Weckwerth bunted in front of the plate and Menasha catcher Bryce Duszak threw low to first base. The ball went down the right-field line, allowing Brett Weckwerth to score all the way from first base with the game’s first run. Jake Weckwerth then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Devin Weber.
With two outs, Axel Donaldson lined a single through the hole between third and shortstop to score Jake Weckwerth and make it 2-0.
Menasha got back-to-back singles from Quinn Ludvigsen and Ian Dohms with two outs in the top of the inning, but Duszak flew out to center field to end the inning.

Menasha got a leadoff single by Ian Dohms in the top of the fourth and Jacob Osentoski reached on an infield single with two outs, but Owen Aykens grounded out to second to end the threat.

Menasha got a leadoff single from No. 9 hitter Trevor Debriyn to lead off the top of the third. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ty Carlson, but the next two batters were retired on a strikeout and a pop fly on the infield.
De Pere pitcher Easton Arendt has thrown 37 pitches.

Westosha Central defeats Arrowhead, 2-1
Westosha Central’s Evan Leaflbad walked to lead off the top of the seventh and Arrowhead starter Peter Kussow reached his pitch limit, finishing with 103 pitches. Brayden Ramus came on in relief for Arrowhead.
Bryce Backus was next up for the Falcons and bunted out in front of the plate for a sacrifice, advancing Leafblad to second base. Carson Sieler then walked, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.

With runners on second and third and one out, Mason Mitacek worked Ramus to a full count and then sent a grounder to shortstop with the infield in. Arrowhead shortstop Brendan Foley threw home and catcher PJ Hamel tagged out Leafblad for the second out.
With Joe Suokko, the No. 3 hitter in the Westosha Central lineup, at the plate, Ramus threw a pitch in the dirt that got away from Hamel. Sieler raced home from third and scored with a headfirst slide to make it 2-1. Suokko then grounded out to short to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Arrowhead’s Sam Reichart walked to lead off the inning. Brendan Foley lined out to left field on a 2-2 pitch for the first out, bringing up PJ Hamel. Hamel popped out to shallow right field for the second out. Wes Lindee, the No. 9 hitter in the Arrowhead order, then struck out swinging to end the game.
Westosha Central, which improves to 25-5, will play either De Pere in a Division 1 semifinal game Wednesday. Arrowhead finishes the season with a 24-6 record.

Arrowhead, Westosha Central tied 1-1 through 6
Westosha Central got the leadoff runner on base in the top of the sixth when Charlie Dietz barely beat out a grounder into the hole at shortstop for an infield hit, but Peter Kussow struck out the next three batters.
Arrowhead threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brady Beck was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a grounder to the mound, then got to third on a deep fly ball to left field for the second out. But Jacob Lorbecki grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.
Kussow is at 97 pitches through six innings and Brody Schulte is at 82 pitches for Westosha.

Westosha Central, Arrowhead pitchers hit stride
Both starting pitchers have settled into a rhythm after a scoreless fifth inning.
Arrowhead pitcher Peter Kussow has retired eight batters in a row, including three strikeouts and four groundouts. He has thrown 77 pitches through five innings.
Westosha Central starter Brody Schulte has retired seven batters in a row. He has thrown 73 pitches.

We had our first clean inning of the game in the fourth as both teams went down 1-2-3.
Westosha Central has just one hit against Peter Kussow, who has walked one and struck out three.
Arrowhead has three hits against Brody Schulte. He has walked two and struck out two.

We’re tied 1-1 through three innings
Westosha Central threatened again in the top of the third and finally delivered the first run of the game.
Another hit batter – the third in three innings – and a walk put runners on first and second with no outs. Charlie Dietz then bunted back to the mound, allowing both runners to advance as he was thrown out at first.
Jake Urban then sent a soft roller toward third base, with Arrowhead third baseman Jacob Lorbecki opting to take the out at first with Mason Mitacek scoring from third with the first run.
Arrowhead got a two-out single to left field from Brady Beck in the bottom of the third and then Cam Carter hit a line drive over the head of the right fielder to score Beck from first. Carter ended up on third base with a triple to tie the game. The Warhawks nearly took the lead when Yamato Takahashi sent a hard grounder down the third-base line. Westosha Central third baseman Bryce Backus made a nice backhand stab, and first baseman Joe Suokko scooped the one-hop throw to retire Takahashi.
Kussow is at 54 pitches through three innings. Schulte has thrown 50 pitches through three.

Westosha Central fails to capitalize
Westosha Central had the makings of a big inning in the top of the second, loading the bases with no outs on a hit batter, a single up the middle by Jack Brenton and another hit batter.
Arrowhead retired the first out on a check-swing bouncer to third base, with Jacob Lorbecki throwing home to catcher PJ Hamel for the force out at the plate. Bryce Backus was then retired on a pop out to second base, leaving the bases loaded with two outs. Carson Sieler was then retired on a shallow fly ball to center field and Arrowhead escaped a major jam.
Arrowhead put runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the second, but couldn’t advance the runners.
Warhawks starting pitcher Peter Kussow has thrown 40 pitches through two innings. Westosha Central starter Brody Schulte has thrown 35 in two innings.

Neither team scores in the first inning
Both teams put a runner on base in the first inning, but neither could score.
Mason Mitacek reached on an error in the top of the first inning for Westosha Central. He advanced to third base with two outs, but Charlie Dietz grounded out to second to end the top half of the first.
In the bottom half, Arrowhead's Brady Beck walked with one out and advanced to second base on a ground out. But Arrowhead cleanup batter Yamato Takahashi lined out to first base to end the inning.
