In brief: Ever wanted to learn how to do car audio research the Crutchfield way? Here’s your chance. We’ll show you how to do what we do, and we’ll use the info to help other owners upgrade the audio in their vehicles.

As a thanks for your hard work, we'll send you a special Crutchfield hat and a gift card. The hats are one-size-fits-most, but the gift cards get larger depending on how much usable research you send us.

If this sounds like the kind of project that’ll get your DIY motor running, read on to learn more.

Most car audio companies would be thrilled with a vehicle database that contains 37,000 vehicles (and counting). But we’re not most companies, and the vehicles we don’t have are the ones we want the most.

If you have a car, truck, ATV, or motorcycle that we haven’t researched yet, we need your help. So welcome to Crutchfield’s latest research project – "crowdsourced" vehicle data.

Crowdsourcing Crutchfield research data

How's that going to work, you ask? Well, we’re actually asking you to do the same kind of research we do. And to help you out, we’ll share the tips and techniques we use to do it. You’ll learn a lot, we’ll learn a lot, and you might have some fun along the way. And most importantly, you’ll help other owners upgrade the audio systems on their vehicles.

That said; this might not be the easiest thing you’ll do this year. We do a few of these every week, and trust us, you will need time and patience to do the research properly.

The physical work is one thing, but the amount of information we need you to record is something else entirely. As you’ll see from the research form, we ask for a LOT of information about your vehicle’s stock audio system.

What we’re looking for

The first step to installing new stereo gear is removing the old stereo gear. That’s glaringly obvious, of course, but what’s not always obvious is exactly how one should go about doing that.

Researching the stereo

On older cars, removing the old radio is usually pretty easy—unscrew some things, disconnect some things, and get it out of there. On most modern vehicles, though, you’ll need to remove several dash panels just to get to the factory radio. And more and more of those radios aren’t “radios” at all, they’re control panels for music and a whole lot more.

In that case, replacement really isn’t possible, and we want you to tell us that. But if you’re dealing with a more traditional receiver, we’re looking for step-by-step instructions on how to remove the dash panels and remove the stock receiver. Your measurements will help us figure out the aftermarket receivers that can fit in the cavity.

Researching the speakers

Same goes with speakers. How do you get to them? How hard is the job? That second question can be especially important with rear deck and cargo area speakers, by the way.

Even if the steps themselves aren’t hard, the time commitment can be pretty intense, so that’s a great thing to know about. And once you’re in there, you’ll measure the cavities to find out what replacement sizes will fit.

Do research, get rewards

As noted, we’ll ask you for a lot of information, measurements, and photos, but we’ll happily take whatever you can give us. If you feel like researching an entire vehicle, that’s great. If you only feel comfortable digging into the door speakers, for example, that’s great, too.

If you only have time to lean into the car and snap some good photos of the radio and the speaker locations, that’s still good info. Do what you want to do and do what you can, when you can. And to convince you to open the toolbox, we’ll make it worth your while!

Note: Rewards available to U.S. customers only.

Cars, trucks, and SUVs

First, since you’re part of the team, you’ll get a thoroughly nifty Crutchfield Research Team cap in exchange for usable information*. These caps aren’t sold, they’re earned. Not only are they not available to the general public, they’re not available to just anyone at Crutchfield, either. If you ever run into someone else wearing this cap, it’s either one of us or another customer who worked as hard as you did to research a vehicle.

But, as they say, that’s not all. In exchange for your usable research, we’ll also give you a Crutchfield Gift Card that’s good towards anything we sell — not just car stuff. How much we’ll put on the card depends on how much work you put into your research. Here’s how it works:

  • Basic photos: $50: A successful photo submission will include a front ¾ exterior shot of the vehicle, plus in-focus, well-lit photos of the receiver, plus (if applicable) all speaker, subwoofer, and amplifier locations and (again, if applicable) the trunk or cargo area.
  • Plus radio/dash speaker info + $100 ($150): If you send in the photos listed above, plus usable research and photos on how to remove the factory receiver and/or dash or pillar speakers, we’ll add another $100 to the card.
  • Plus speaker info + $100 ($250): Send us the basic photos, plus usable research and step-by-step photos on how to remove the factory receiver, dash/pillar speakers, and door and/or rear deck speakers, we’ll add another $100 to the card.
  • Plus subwoofer/amp info + $100 ($350): If you’re really into this kind of thing, you can earn one heck of a gift card. Send in basic photos, plus usable research on how to remove the factory receiver, dash/pillar speakers, door/deck speakers, any other speakers, and the subwoofer(s) and amplifier(s), we’ll add yet another $100 to the card.

Motorcycles, UTVs, golf carts, etc.

Smaller vehicles are still big deals at Crutchfield. For motorcycles, golf carts, UTVs, and the like, there’s obviously less overall research to be done, but we’ll still take care of you. You’ll get a Crutchfield Research Team cap, of course, but there are still gift cards to be had.

  • Basic photos: $50: A successful “basic” photo submission will include a front ¾ exterior shot of the vehicle, plus in-focus, well-lit photos of the receiver, plus (if applicable) all speaker, subwoofer, and amplifier locations and (again, if applicable) the trunk or cargo area.
  • Plus radio/dash speaker info + $150 ($200): If you send in the photos listed above, plus usable research and photos on how to remove the factory receiver and speakers, we’ll add another $150 to the card.

*What’s "usable information," exactly?

This might sound a bit subjective, but what we’re looking for is clear, well-lit, in-focus photography (our preferred photo ratio is 4:3 or similar), accurate disassembly information, and your best attempt at a logical workflow. Our instructions (see below) will explain it all in further detail, plus we’ll send you a sample of our famous Crutchfield ResearchNotes™ to show you what we'll do with all this stuff.

Our helpful how-to guide

To explain all this in greater detail, we’ve assembled the Crutchfield Guide to Vehicle Research. This helpful document will explain exactly what we’re looking for and share some tips on how our experts do the job – and do it safely. If you're interested in being a part of the project, you'll use the same forms our researchers use for all the data and measurements they collect. You can also check out a sample of how we'll use your data below.

If a project like this sounds like something that’ll get your DIY motor running, let us know. Any and all of the information you can provide will be a big help to us and (more importantly) to other people who own vehicles like yours.

This is a brand-new program for us, and we’re really excited about it. We’re looking forward to seeing the fruits of your research, of course, but we’re also looking forward to your feedback.

Raymond, That's true. One reason (of several) is that a stock '32 predates the dawn of the 12-volt electrical system by a couple of decades. That said, there are plenty of ways to get great sound in your older car, provided it has been converted to 12-volt power. After all, hot rodders have been doing things like this forever. Give us a call and talk to one of our advisors. We can help you choose the right gear and give you the right advice on how to install it.

Audition speakers before you buy

SpeakerCompare simulates the sound of home and car speakers through your headphones. It lets you compare sonic characteristics between speakers so that you can make a more informed shopping decision.

Why selecting your headphones is important

SpeakerCompare tailors your listening experience to the exact headphones you have, so that what you hear is comparable to auditioning speakers side-by-side in person. Knowing which model headphones you’re using lets us remove any sonic coloring from your experience.

Two different listening modes

In an actual listening room, you'd find that some speakers play louder than others when fed the same amount of power. In equal power mode, you'll hear these differences in loudness as they naturally occur between speakers.

In equal volume mode, we've made the loudness of each speaker about the same. This gives you a more direct comparison of subtle voicing differences between speakers.

Nothing beats listening to speakers in your space

SpeakerCompare gives you a sense of the sonic differences. But performance in the real world is affected by the acoustics of your car or home, your choice of amplification, and your source material. We still believe that the gold standard for auditioning speakers is hearing them in your own environment — that’s why we offer a 60-day money-back guarantee.
