I get to be part of some really cool stuff.Yesterday, I commented on HEITNER LEGAL helping with Angel Reese becoming an owner of a soccer team.Today, it was announced that my clients Haley and Hanna Cavinder have taken equity ownership in protein drink brand Slate Milk.My law firm assisted with the contractual work while Jeff Hoffman and Alexi Hecht did a tremendous job as the agents on the deal. The Queens of NIL are not only ambassadors for the delicious and nutritious beverage brand. They are proud owners of a startup that has amazing upside. The Cavinder Twins can make a much greater return on their investment than just taking a guaranteed sum of money in exchange for promotional activity."We are incredibly excited to partner with Haley and Hanna," said Manny Lubin, Co-Founder of Slate. "Haley and Hanna have done a remarkable job of becoming trailblazers in the new NIL partnership culture that we live in. They're hard-working, smart, and we think embody the gritty and underdog mentality we appreciate here at Slate. We couldn't be more excited to welcome the Twins onto the team as both investors and Slate athletes."I got to know Manny throughout the negotiation process and I’m very excited for all parties as this project pushes forward!https://lnkd.in/eT7TpGGs#LinkedInSports

I get to be a part of some really cool stuff. For instance, today it was announced that women's basketball star Angel Reese will be part of the ownership group for a new pro women's soccer team that is launching in Washington D.C."I want to help grow women's sports and elevate female athletes across the board," said Reese. "We're taking over, and I'm honored to be able to support Power FC and invest in women's soccer in the DMV (District, Maryland, Virginia) community."My firm played a small role and I'm thankful for having the opportunity to provide an assist. It came together quickly. On May 2, Angel's agent asked whether HEITNER LEGAL would be interested in reviewing and revising the agreement to grant Angel equity in the new soccer team.Little did I know that our redlines would be sent to someone on the other side whom I have known for years. Yes, the sports industry is very small. We got the deal done with speed, precision, and redlines that were fair to our client. And today, we celebrate Angel becoming a team owner!https://lnkd.in/e5vV4MeT#LinkedInSports

Can there be collective bargaining without classifying college athletes as employees? Congress would need to create a "special status" class. Is that plausible? Is everyone on board? Here's this week's #NIL newsletter.#LinkedInSports

The U.S. Supreme Court issued an important Copyright decision that if there is a timely claim for infringement, there is no limitation on the number of years of damages claimed. But it didn't rule on whether a copyright owner possesses a timely claim.I dive into the ruling as well as the important dissent on HEITNER LEGAL's blog:https://lnkd.in/ejzQQkjW#copyright #copyrightinfringement #scotus

Representing a lot of #NFLDraft picks is good for show.Rep players on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th contracts, and that’s how you make the dough.Signing good players is tough. Keeping them is tougher.#LinkedInSports

Every year, I put together a list of the player-agent pairings in the 1st round of the #NFLDraft. You can find the 2024 list here: https://lnkd.in/e3vMDhfiIt includes the following notes:- 2 of the top 4 picks (Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr.) opted to go into the NFL Draft without signing agents. While they may have had advisors behind the scenes, they did not sign Standard Representation Agreements with NFLPA Contract Advisors.- Creative Artists Agency dominated the top of the first round once again, with 3 clients selected within the first 8 picks and a 4th client taken at pick 11 as well as a 5th at pick 12. By that moment of the Draft, CAA had 5 clients selected and no other agencies had more than one client off the board. In all, CAA had 12 first-round picks.- Behind CAA were Athletes First and WME Sports, which each had 4 clients selected in the first round.- Excel Sports Management and Wasserman had 2 clients each off the board in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.- In 2023, 23 agencies shared the wealth of clients selected in this first round. In 2024, the number of agencies with clients selected in the first round dropped to 11.Feel free to share this free content!#LinkedInSports

How much money is Caleb Williams saving by not having an agent? It’s not as much as you may think. The NFLPA caps agent fees at 3%. Every agent would take 1% or less to rep a guaranteed first overall pick in the #NFLDraft. Many would do the 1st contract (which is slotted) for no commission.Additionally, Caleb could have training-related costs covered by an agent, which likely wouldn’t be reimbursable as long as Caleb paid some commission to the agent. With Caleb’s leverage, he could have an experienced representative at little-to-no cost.#LinkedInSports
