HOW THE THERMOMETER WORKS
This thermometer detects infrared energy radiated from the skin and tissue in the ear canal. This thermometer has been tested and proven to be safe and accurate when used as directed in this instruction manual. This device has settings that alert you to a temperature above normal.
Normal temperature varies from person to person, by age, and even by time of day and activity. It is best to establish a "normal" temperature range for each user of the thermometer while the person is feeling well. We suggest taking readings in the morning and in the late afternoon and averaging them to get a "normal" temperature. Record that temperature so you can use it to compare against temperatures measured for that person when they are not feeling well. Note that normal body temperatures tend to decrease with age.
The ConairCare Thermometer features a temperature alert setting: It will beep to alert you to a low-grade fever and to a high-grade fever.
Generally, temperatures in the range of 96.4˚F - 99.4˚F (35.8˚C - 37.4˚C) are considered normal; temperatures between 99.5˚F - 101.3˚F (37.5˚C - 38.5˚C) are considered a light fever and temperatures over 101.3˚F (38.5˚C) are considered a high-grade fever.
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR THERMOMETER
SETTING UP YOUR THERMOMETER
Push the power button on the thermometer to turn on the device. If the thermometer display does not light up, open the battery door on the bottom of the handle and make sure the batteries are correctly installed with respect to polarity. Close the battery door and press the button again. The display will light up.
SELECTING FAHRENHEIT OR CELSIUS
With the thermometer turned off, press and hold the SCAN/M button for 5 seconds. The thermometer will display the current measurement units (˚F or ˚C) on the screen. Press the SCAN/M button again to switch to the other measurement units. The thermometer will turn off after a few seconds.
BEFORE TAKING A TEMPERATURE READING
Ear wax residue may lead to inaccurate low temperature readings, so it is recommended to clean the ear prior to using the thermometer.
Wait at least 30 minutes after strenuous exercise to take your temperature.
Take the temperature in a room that does not have significant changes in airflow, such as a room with large fans and air conditioners. Do not take your temperature near heat sources, such as radiators or heat registers.
The body's temperature adapts to the environment. Allow at least 20 minutes to adjust to room temperature if a person is entering a room that is significantly warmer or cooler than the room they were in previously.
MEASURING EAR TEMPERATURE
Press the power button to turn on the device. The unit will beep and segments of the screen will be shown for one second, the screen will turn blue, and the last measurement taken will be displayed.
When the thermometer is ready to take a reading, you will see 000.0 on the screen and you will hear another beep. Remove the clear cap from the sensor probe and keep it in a safe place. Straighten the ear canal by gently pulling the middle of the ear back and up. Place the probe firmly into the ear canal, and press the SCAN/M button. You will hear one short beep. Keep the probe in the ear until the thermometer emits a longer beep to signal the completion of the measurement. Replace the protective cover.
Note: To keep measurements consistent, we suggest that you always take the temperature in the same ear and insert the device to a similar depth.
FEVER ALERTS
When the measured temperature exceeds a preset level, the thermometer will beep to alert you to a fever.
- Low-level fever
When a low-level fever is detected (99.5˚F - 101.3˚F or 37.5˚C - 38.5˚C), the thermometer will emit a slower double beep to alert you. - High-level fever
When a high-grade fever is detected (101.3˚F/38.5˚C or above), the device will emit a faster triple beep to alert you to a high fever.
STORED READING RECALL
With the thermometer off, press the SCAN/M button. The memory icon (M in an oval) will flash on screen. Once in recall mode, press the SCAN/M button and the display will show the number of the stored reading and then the temperature recorded. Press the SCAN/M button consecutively, until you have seen all recorded readings (up to 32), after which the thermometer will go back to displaying the initial reading.
AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN
This thermometer is equipped with a battery-saving automatic shutdown feature: After 20 seconds without any user action, the thermometer will power down. You can turn it back on by simply pushing the power button on the handle.
BATTERY REPLACEMENT
This product uses 2 AAA alkaline batteries (included). When the thermometer shows only the battery icon on the display and the icon is flashing, it indicates that the batteries are low and need to be replaced. To replace the batteries, open the battery cover on the back of the handle. Take out the old batteries and install the new batteries, making sure the polarity is correct (note the "+" and "-" signs). Close the battery door and properly dispose of the batteries. If the thermometer is not used for more than 3 months, remove the batteries to prevent potential damage from battery fluid.
BATTERY SAFETY
- This product requires 2 AAA batteries.
- Since batteries are sensitive to high temperatures, keep them in a cool, dry place when storing them.
- Battery contacts need to be clean, both on the battery and in the appliance, before installation.
- Batteries should be removed from the appliance when not being used for long periods of time (months).
- Never recharge non-rechargeable batteries.
- Be careful to install (+) and (-) to the correct plus and minus on device.
- Replace all old batteries at one time. Do not mix old and new.
- Remove discharged batteries immediately to avoid leakage.
- Never put batteries into a fire.
- Switch off devices after use.
- Keep batteries away from children, especially the batteries that are small enough to ingest.
- If a battery is ingested, seek immediate medical help.
- Never open, crush, puncture or disassemble batteries.
- Dispose of batteries according to any state and local regulations.
- Do not dispose of rechargeable batteries as solid waste.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Check whether the battery level is sufficient before each use. If the batteries are low (display shows a blinking battery icon), change the batteries and then take the temperature.
Before each use, check the equipment casing for damage. If it is damaged, do not use. The sensor head is the most important part of the thermometer, and the front part (sensor mirror) is fragile. Be careful not to damage the sensor when you clean it.
Wipe device with a soft, dry cloth after each use. If the thermometer is dirty, you may wipe the unit with a damp cloth moistened with water or neutral detergent, and then wipe it with a dry cloth. Avoid getting water into the body of the thermometer so that the internal electronic components do not get damaged.
This thermometer features antibacterial product protection. The antibacterial plastic has been proven to reduce surface bacteria by up to 99.9% (tested on E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus by an independent third-party lab according to ISO 22196:2011).
If you are still concerned about contamination, you may clean the thermometer with 75% alcohol before and after use. Use only a small amount of alcohol: Excessive amounts of alcohol can damage the electronics of the device.
Do not use volatile oil, paint thinner, and other chemical solvents to wipe the product.
DISPLAY INDICATORS AND TROUBLESHOOTING
